Are You Protected From Fire?

Our trails serve as effective firebreaks and provide safe passage for firefighters.

Effective Firebreak

Trailscape encourages our clients to become "fire ready" at the beginning of summer in order to prepare for high fire season. Studies have shown, the more advanced preparation done by homeowners has a direct impact on the success rate of their family and home being saved from fire damage.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) provides several great resources including accurate and real time incident reports, a texting service to alert you about local wildfires and a proactive checklist to download.

Building a trail is a lesser-known, but perhaps more effective, way to protect your family and home from fire. As seen in the above photo, Trailscape's trails double as firebreaks, frequently stopping flames in their tracks.

Did you know that if you have a trail, your home is often prioritized because firefighters can access the land quickly, resulting in a higher success rate of the fire being extinguished? You can see in this recent report from ABC News, firefighters struggling with the terrain.

We also believe that education is an important component of our business. We teach our clients how to keep their trails in good condition by clearing them of leaves and pine needles. We also show them how to trim trees and bushes and get rid of weeds. In general, each client will require approximately 10 feet of cleared space, including the trail. To create an effective firebreak, for example, if the trail is 4 feet wide, there should be 3 feet of clearing on either side. Of course, if clients do not want to do it themselves, our in-house maintenance crew will come out and do it for them. We understand that maintaining trails throughout the year is critical to the success of protecting our clients and their homes.

Check out the video below to see one of the seven homes saved by our trail in the Glass Fire of 2020! See how the fire came almost up to the family's home, as well as an area where firefighters were able to seek refuge while fighting the fire. Be sure to keep watching because at 3:18 you will hear from one of our clients about how her trail connects and protects her family and home.

If you or someone you know is interested in adding a trail to enjoy and protect their family and home, please share our contact information and we will put together a custom plan. If you already have one of our trails on your property, let us know if you'd like to be a part of our trail maintenance program, in which we keep your trail in great shape all year.
