Embracing Everyday Joy: 10 Ways to Stop & Smell the Roses

With longer days, blooming flowers, and warmer weather, there's no denying that spring is one of the most beautiful seasons to "stop and smell the roses." While this old saying may sound like cliché it's sound advice for finding satisfaction in life. By allowing ourselves to pause, reflect, and appreciate more, we can find more joy and happiness. It is for this reason that I am sharing 10 ways to "stop and smell the roses."

Beauty is exploding everywhere! Have you noticed?

The other day, I intentionally took some time to walk around my yard in Roseville. Which I should point out is carefully tended to by my dear wife Tonia. It is her playground and source of inspiration for her art. She finds beauty in just about anything, which is a characteristic I truly admire in her. I am usually running from place to place without stopping to take in what's around me.

So much to Tonia's surprise (and mine) I grabbed my camera and headed outside. It was a beautiful sun filled day. Perfect for capturing the colors of spring especially this year! Our repetitive cycle of sun and storms has produced vivid colors against the greenery.

Have you happened to notice the “chartreuse” color, which I'm told by Tonia is actually a yellow, that fills outdoor spaces?

Simply phenomenal, aren't they?

And there is nothing better than finding joy in the most unexpected places! All of this beautiful inspiration led me to this blog post and I thought, why not share with you 10 ways you can stop and smell the roses? Sometimes we all need a little reminder of what's right in front of our noses.

10 Ways to Stop and Smell the Roses

Roses in my backyard.

1. Look for beauty in unlikely places! There’s a place I continually go back to in our driveway, it’s a sewer clean out with a little hole you use to pick up the cover. Despite its less-than-glamorous purpose, this little spot has become a source of life and growth. It's a reminder that beauty and positivity can be found in even the most unlikely places. Keep an eye out for those little moments of joy in your day-to-day life!

2. When you go outside, appreciate the simple things like trees, flowers, birds, scents, the sky, etc.

3. Plan time to take it slow.

4. Put together a picnic and enjoy your meal outdoors.

5. Bring the spring indoors. Grab a variety of flowers from your walk and put them in a vase on your table or open your windows and appreciate fresh air.

6. Find a book and spend quiet time enjoying a good read outside.

7. Grab your spouse, parent, child, or friend and invite them to go with you on a stroll. Soak up the quality time and hold on to it for a rainy day.

8. Seek out a quiet and peaceful place to stop and rest. Bring a blanket, lay down, and immerse yourself in the sounds, sights, and feel of what is around you.

9. Pause and take a deep breath. Intentionally take time to inhale and exhale. Inhale peace, beauty, and life. Exhale the stress, worry, and overwhelm.

10. Take your phone and put it on airplane mode so that you won't be disturbed, but take photos that you think are beautiful and post them in the comments on this blog! And we would especially love those that might be taken alongside a trail! You know we had to throw that in there!

I hope that this blog post simply inspires you. I wish many blessings to you and that you may be a blessing to others as you notice the beauty around you.
